Dr. Barry Kelly brings a wealth of experience to the Chemistry Matters team. He is an experienced scientist, with expertise in analytical chemistry, environmental toxicology and risk assessment. He has over twenty years’ experience, working with universities, industry partners and federal and provincial government agencies. He has conducted numerous projects related to the environmental behaviour, exposure and health effects of various chemical contaminants.
He received a Master’s (1999) and Ph.D. (2006) from the School of Resource and Environmental Management at Simon Fraser University (SFU). He worked as a Research Fellow at the Institute of Ocean Sciences, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (Sidney, British Columbia). More recently, he worked as an Assistant Professor within Department of Environmental Science and Engineering at the National University of Singapore (2009-2017).
Dr. Kelly has published over 50 peer-reviewed research articles in the field of environmental chemistry and toxicology, including publications in high-impact journals such as Environmental Science & Technology, Analytical Chemistry, Water Research and Science. He currently holds an adjunct faculty appointment within the Faculty of Environment at SFU. He is also an active member of the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the Society of Environmental Toxicologist & Chemists (SETAC) and is on the editorial board of Environmental Toxicology & Chemistry.
